HAWAII

Hawaii is a wildlife watcher's dream. Between October and mid-May each year, migratory humpback whales visiting warm tropical waters for calving and breeding are the stars of the local whale watch tours.

Famous for their specialized vocalizations, or songs, humpbacks frequently demonstrate impressive spyhops, tail slaps and breaches as they interact with each other. All of the larger islands offer whale watching opportunities that may include sightings of many dolphin species, false killer whales and pilot whales, and occasionally some of the rarer beaked whale species. Hundreds of different types of birds are present here too, including species of herons, grebes, albatrosses, petrels, frigatebirds, shearwaters, terns, and jaegers. Manta and eagle rays and five different species of sea turtles also share these waters.
